Ready to respond

Being ready to respond means being open, alert and compassionate enough to notice when someone may be struggling and having the confidence to respond with calmness, care and honesty.

It is not about having all the answers or saying the perfect thing, it is about being willing to trust your instincts, start a conversation, ask directly about suicide if needed, and create a safe space where someone feels seen, heard and supported. Often, simply staying calm, present and genuine can make a powerful difference to someone in distress.

Put simply:

  • Be open, alert and compassionate enough to notice when someone may be struggling
  • Trust your instincts and feel confident to start honest, direct conversations about suicide when needed
  • Stay calm, present and genuine to help someone feel seen, heard and supported
