Prescription Safe Plans For Educational Settings

This 45-minute session is packed full of essential information for teachers and well-being leads and anyone who has a duty of care for a student starting, changing, or tapering from antidepressants.

During this talk, you will learn why Prescription Safe Plans support better outcomes for all stakeholders and how you can play a vital role in supporting students whose medications list ‘suicidal thoughts’ as a side effect, in particular antidepressants.

Why is this important? If not pre-warned with clear instructions on what to do if their well-being deteriorates, it leaves students extremely vulnerable, some will conclude that their life is spiralling out of control despite the medication and may succumb to their sense of hopelessness and end their life. OLLIE believes that antidepressant-related suicide is a devastating tragedy that can be reduced with better education and support.

(Please note this session is open to all, but will focus on the needs of school settings).

OLLIE Foundation Prescription Safe Plan Awareness training

Talk explores:

  • the global governance and NICE Guidelines that inform how and when we use antidepressants

  • how we can navigate the inherent conflict within prescribing drugs with severe side effects and reduce the potential for moral injury

  • how prescribers can (without extending their consultation time) effectively educate patients to feel confident about their medication whilst ensuring they know what to do should their well-being deteriorate whilst using their medication

  • how Prescription Safe Plans, aligned with NICE Guidelines, assist prescribers and patients by providing clear language and pathways that can substantially reduce the possibility of a patient concluding that their suicidal thoughts are despite their medication not because of it, or feel unclear on who they can reach out to for advice.

Delegates will:

  • explore a range of specific safeguarding issues for students using antidepressants

  • gain a clear understanding of the potential for increased suicide risk in students using antidepressants

  • explore how staff can use Prescription Safe Plans to support students who disclose they are using antidepressants with clear instructions on what to do should their well-being deteriorate

  • feel confident to talk with students about the possible side-effects that can be experienced on anti-depressants and how to use a Prescription Safe Plan to help mitigate those risks

  • this session goes beyond theory, providing practical tools that can keep students safe from iatrogenic harm.
